Dear Montgomery County Public Schools Families and Staff,

Congratulations, everyone – we made it! Today is the last day of school for the 2023-2024 school year. Now, as we approach the end of June, I want to reflect on the time I've spent with you this spring at MCPS.

This school year, Stone Mill Elementary School was named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, making it the 43rd school in our district with that distinction. The National School Boards Association honored MCPS with their Silver Magna Award, recognizing our well-being social worker program for its innovative approach. MCPS was also designated a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. U.S. News and World Report listed eight MCPS high schools in the top 100 nationally. And four MCPS schools were certified as 2024 Maryland Green Schools, bringing the MCPS total to 101 schools.

We've celebrated graduations, continuation ceremonies, and recognitions that have brought our community together. Attending commencement ceremonies and witnessing our seniors’ optimism is truly inspiring. Congratulations to all of this year’s graduates! I wish them tremendous success in their futures.

We honored nearly 650 retirees last week, some with 25, 40, and even more than 50 years of service to MCPS. Their dedication has been invaluable, and we are immensely grateful for each of them.

Summer at MCPS means planning and professional development. Although some school buildings fall quiet, the work of supporting summer programs and preparing for the next school year continues.

I encourage students to enjoy summer break, embrace outdoor activities, and create cherished memories with friends and family.

As we celebrate the completion of the school year, let's recognize the hard work, learning, and growth that have taken place. To our incredible educators, thank you for your dedication and contributions to students throughout the school year. I extend my deepest appreciation to parents, families, and the community for supporting our 160,000 students, our exceptional school teams, and our more than 200 public schools and programs in Montgomery County.

Together, we enrich our students’ lives and strengthen the community for today and for the future. Congratulations to everyone for a successful 2023-2024 school year! Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer.

In service to children,

Monique T.  Felder, Ph.D.
Interim Superintendent of Schools
